Terms and Conditions – Updated October 2026

1. About Papplewick Driving School

Papplewick Driving School provides professional driver training and tuition in accordance with current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) requirements and the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.

Papplewick Driving School is committed to providing safe, professional, respectful and effective driver training.

Where applicable, tuition will be provided by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

These Terms and Conditions are intended to explain the arrangements between Papplewick Driving School and the pupil and to support the professional standards set out in the DVSA Approved Driving Instructor Code of Practice.

The new DVSA ADI Code of Practice is due to become mandatory between late 2026 and early 2027. Papplewick Driving School intends to operate in accordance with the requirements and principles of that Code.

2. Booking Driving Lessons

Lessons must be booked in advance and are subject to instructor availability.

A lesson booking constitutes an agreement between Papplewick Driving School and the pupil for the agreed date, time and duration.

The pupil is responsible for ensuring that they are available and ready to commence the lesson at the agreed time.

Lessons will normally start and finish at the agreed collection/drop-off location unless another arrangement has been agreed in advance.

3. Lesson Duration and Prices

The current price and duration of lessons will be confirmed to the pupil before the lesson or course is booked.

The pupil will be informed of any changes to lesson prices before the new price applies.

The instructor will provide the full lesson time that has been booked, subject to circumstances outside the instructor's reasonable control, safety considerations or situations where the lesson must be stopped.

Lessons will not deliberately be shortened without appropriate reason.

4. Payment

Payment must be made in accordance with the payment arrangements agreed with Papplewick Driving School.

Where lessons or courses are paid for in advance, Papplewick Driving School will maintain an accurate record of the amount paid and the tuition provided.

Any unused prepaid lesson balance will remain available to the pupil subject to these Terms and Conditions.

Papplewick Driving School will provide tuition corresponding to lessons or courses paid for.

5. Cancellation and Rearrangement of Lessons

Pupils should provide as much notice as possible if they need to cancel or rearrange a lesson.

Cancellation with less than 24 hours' notice may result in the full lesson fee being payable.

Where a pupil fails to attend a booked lesson without reasonable notice, the lesson may be charged in full.

Exceptions may be considered where circumstances outside the pupil's reasonable control occur.

Papplewick Driving School will aim to give pupils reasonable notice if the instructor needs to cancel or rearrange a lesson.

Where the instructor cancels a lesson, the pupil will not be charged for that cancelled lesson.

6. Punctuality

Pupils should arrive at the agreed collection point on time.

If a pupil is late, the lesson will normally finish at the originally agreed time.

The instructor cannot guarantee that additional time will be available at the end of the lesson.

If the instructor is delayed, reasonable efforts will be made to provide the full tuition time wherever practicable.

7. Driving Licence and Legal Requirements

Before receiving driving tuition, the pupil must hold the appropriate provisional or full driving licence for the vehicle being driven.

The instructor may check the pupil's driving entitlement.

The pupil must immediately inform Papplewick Driving School of any change that may affect their entitlement to drive.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • licence suspension or revocation

  • new driving convictions or endorsements

  • medical conditions affecting driving

  • changes to eyesight

  • restrictions placed on their licence

  • any other legal restriction affecting their ability to drive.

The pupil must be able to meet the legal eyesight requirements for driving.

The instructor may request an eyesight or number-plate check at the start of training and periodically thereafter.

8. Safe and Professional Instruction

Safety is the highest priority during all driving lessons.

The instructor will provide tuition in a professional manner and will seek to help the pupil achieve the learning outcomes of the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.

The instructor will:

  • behave professionally and respectfully

  • comply with applicable legislation and DVSA requirements.

9. Professional Conduct and Respect

Papplewick Driving School operates a zero-tolerance approach to threatening, abusive, discriminatory or violent behaviour.

The instructor and pupil are expected to treat each other with respect.

The instructor will not discriminate against a pupil on the basis of protected characteristics including age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.

The instructor will avoid inappropriate physical contact, inappropriate language and inappropriate discussions.

Professional boundaries will be maintained at all times.

Personal or confidential information disclosed by a pupil will be treated appropriately and confidentially, subject to legal and safeguarding requirements.

10. Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices

The instructor will not use a mobile phone or handheld device while driving or supervising a pupil's driving except were permitted by law and when the vehicle is safely and legally parked.

Pupils must not use a mobile phone while driving except where legally permitted and appropriately controlled.

11. Alcohol, Drugs and Fitness to Drive

A pupil must not attend a driving lesson while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely.

The instructor may refuse or terminate a lesson if they reasonably believe that the pupil is unfit to drive.

No refund will normally be due where a lesson has to be stopped because the pupil is unfit to drive.

12. Smoking and Vaping

Smoking and vaping are not permitted in the driving school vehicle.

The pupil must not bring anything into the vehicle that could create a safety risk or interfere with the instructor's ability to provide safe tuition.

13. Vehicle Safety

The driving school vehicle will be maintained and used in accordance with applicable legal and safety requirements.

The instructor may terminate or postpone a lesson if the vehicle or road conditions are considered unsafe.

The pupil must follow reasonable safety instructions given by the instructor.

14. Driving Test Preparation

Pupils will be advised about their progress and readiness for the practical driving test.

The decision to book a driving test remains the pupil's responsibility.

The instructor will provide reasonable guidance based on the pupil's progress, competence, confidence and ability to demonstrate the required standard consistently.

Pupils should consider DVSA test waiting times and cancellation rules when deciding when to book a test.

15. Use of the Driving School Vehicle for the Practical Test

Where the pupil uses the Papplewick Driving School vehicle for their practical driving test, the vehicle must be available, road legal and suitable for the test.

The instructor may withhold use of the vehicle if:

  • the pupil is not considered sufficiently prepared to drive safely

  • the pupil does not meet the legal requirements for the test

  • the vehicle is unavailable or unsafe

  • the pupil has not complied with the agreed arrangements

  • circumstances outside the instructor's reasonable control prevent use of the vehicle.

Where the instructor decides that the school vehicle cannot be provided for a driving test, the pupil will be informed as soon as reasonably practicable.

The instructor will not deliberately cancel or rearrange a pupil's driving test without the pupil's knowledge and agreement.

16. Driving Test Debrief

Where reasonably practicable, the instructor will accompany the pupil on their practical driving test and listen to the examiner's debrief if requested by the pupil.

The final decision regarding whether a pupil passes or fails the driving test is made by the DVSA driving examiner.

The instructor cannot guarantee a driving test pass.

17. Pupil Progress Records

Papplewick Driving School will maintain appropriate records of pupil progress.

Records may include:

  • lessons completed

  • skills covered

  • areas requiring further development

18. Refunds

Any refund will be considered in accordance with these Terms and Conditions and applicable consumer law.

Where prepaid lessons remain unused, Papplewick Driving School will consider the circumstances and any refund due.

Lessons already provided will not normally be refundable.

Where a lesson has been cancelled by the pupil without the required notice, the applicable cancellation charge may be deducted.

19. Complaints Procedure

Papplewick Driving School aims to resolve complaints fairly, promptly and professionally.

A pupil who has a complaint should first raise the matter with the instructor so that an opportunity can be given to resolve it.

Complaints should preferably be made in writing and should explain:

  • the nature of the complaint

  • the date or dates concerned

  • the circumstances surrounding the complaint

  • the outcome the pupil is seeking.

Papplewick Driving School will consider the complaint and respond as soon as reasonably practicable.

If a pupil remains dissatisfied after completing the school's complaints procedure, they may seek further guidance from Citizens Advice.

The instructor will maintain appropriate professional boundaries with pupils at all times.
